Overpass. In the Fall of 2001, the Proprietors of Kat Ran Press were pleased to
offer Overpass, the first title in a new series of number books. Where an
alphabet book illustrates each letter of the alphabet with a
corresponding word and drawing (A is for apple; B is for boy; C is for
cat, etc.), for our number books, we have asked artists to illustrate
numbers in any manner they see fit. They may decide to show a
selection of seemingly unrelated and increasing items (one bottle
rocket, two pieces of glass, three empty peanut shells, etc.), or they
may wish to show an increasing number of things on a more related
theme. Jennifer Hill has chosen the latter approach in her Overpass series. Six drawings of imaginary structures were made in July of 2001
and reproduced via letterpress-printed photopolymer plates. After the
printing on handmade Twinrocker papers, Ms Hill continued to garnish
the printed sheets with considerable amounts of pencil. Although these
hand embellishments follow similar patterns and themes, each book is
different and unique. Sixty-five copies have been printed from Gill Sans
types and sewn into paper wrappers at a finished size of 10 by 14
inches. Of these copies, only fifty were numbered and offered to the
public for $180. Remaining copies are available for immediate delivery.
